General soreness after a new activity usually fades in 2–3 days. Sharp pain, swelling, or anything that changes your movement needs rest and, if in doubt, advice from a physio.
Rest, gentle movement (not total immobility!), and gradual return. Ice, compression, and elevation can help early on. For anything persistent, consult a professional.
Do dynamic (moving) stretches before, and static (holding) stretches after. Both are useful, but don’t overdo it on cold muscles.
